ensenada dental clinic

Last weekend, I headed down to Ensenada, Mexico with a group of people. Nope, not a vacation or anything...volunteering to help out with a dental clinic of sorts. My mom is part of the Irvine Spectrum Rotary Club, and a few years back, they paired up with a wonderful dentist by the name of Charles Tozzer. Tozzer regularly holds free clinics for those people (especially children) whose families can't afford dental care. He holds a clinic SEVERAL times a year, in different areas, including Ensenada. So, volunteers head down for the day to help out in any way possible. I did it once last year, and told my boyfriend that the next time I went, it would be a wonderful thing if he could join us. He did, and he was a TREASURE. when i went last year, we had only a couple of people in our group that spoke Spanish and were thus able to translate to the patients and their families. This time around, we had about 7 or 8 people, Tony included amongst them. And, he is WONDERFUL with kids, which was probably even more important. Here's a quick rundown of the weekend...

headed to our hotel in ensenada on friday night, so we'd already be there in the morning. (first off, wow...the hotel we were in was REALLY nice...felt sorta guilty about that.) in any case, we got up on saturday morning and headed out to the site. each time, a different elementary school in the area is chosen...notes are sent home with the children ahead of time, and it's basically first come, first serve for whoever shows up. Pa210061

We had three rooms in the school for our use. One was used for most of the dental work (as seen here). (On the last trip, we didn't have any real dentist chairs but instead used crude-styled chairs that had been fashioned out of wood. By this trip, the Rotary Club had donated the money to purchase these traveling dentist chairs.) Another room was used for eye exams (new this time around), and for sealants (if kids just needed this done instead of a lot of other work on their teeth). The last room was our break-room of sorts...not used much at all, let me tell you.

Pa210063 The dentists didn't bring their own dental assistants, so a few of us stepped in for those duties. I did this for awhile myself...started by taking notes on the child's chart, to track what work the child would need to have done (fillings, extractions, etc...). The dentist I was paired with did NOT have his own light, so I held a flashlight for him, trying to follow his little dentist mirror around in the patient's mouth, so he could see what he was doing (see the pic of me). I wasn't sitting for long, but had to bend over him in order to see better. Next thing I knew, he was also having me help him by using the suction tool and the tool that releases bursts of water and air. wow. i was SOOO nervous. Tony wandered the room, going from child to child and trying to get them to smile, explaining what was happening, and translating from dentist to child. As I said, he was amazing.

Pa210059 At the same time that this was happening, other people (including some of the kids from the school) were painting some of the buildings of the school. Kinda cool.

Pa210080 this little girl was SOOO adorable. fascinated with someone else's camera and kept posing for pictures, before grabbing the camera to take several pictures herself!!!  but...notice the older woman in the background, holding the basketball...she wanted to know if she could get her teeth worked on, as well. Well, it was a CHILDREN's clinic, but Tozzer told her that if she could wait until after the children were seen, she could be seen after. cool, huh?

Pa210096 here was another cutie. part of the last family to be seen for the day.

another memorable moment...there was one guy who was there to help with the generator. he was talking to a few people, and in the course of a general conversation, he mentioned how his wife was currently sick, and the medicines cost nearly $150, and he didn't know how he was going to pay for them. well, the story spread, and by the time we all packed up for the day, a collection had been made and $150 was presented to him. how totally COOL is that???!!!

Pa220134 we were gone by 5, heading back to the hotel. the guy we were following was speeding and nearly lost us along the way! but we cleaned up and headed down the street to a N-I-C-E place for dinner, with a four course meal...and plenty to drink. it was very enjoyable, to say the least. one of the best moments at the restaurant was hearing the ocean...it was like nothin i'd ever heard. now mind you, i live not too far from the ocean, so it shouldn't be anything new...but the restaurant was situated RIGHT on the beach. and the beach didn't have sand, but small ROCKS instead. so as the waves went out, the rocks shifted around and the sound was not unlike a LOT of little firecrackers. it was neat-o. (by the way, this pic is a view we had from the hallway right outside of our room! our room's patio overlooked the pool, with the ocean in the distance...and the hotel room was pretty much larger than my whole apartment!!!)

headed back to the hotel, and a group of us hung out at the bar for a while. it was nice to see familiar faces that i've known for yeats, but it was neat to meet the newbies, too. i think i might have found a new friend, too! (she lives nearby.)

spent one more night at the hotel, and left for home in the morning. it was good to be home, but it was a wonderful weekend experience.

Scrapbook Answers Magazine, R.I.P.

For those of you who have not yet heard the tragic news...Scrapbook Answers Magazine is to be no more. The November issue (on stands now) is to be the last issue. I don't know the exact details, as I first found out about this by reading Ana Cabrera' s blog (she was involved in the magazine). But, from what I gather, the parent company changed and/or just decided to dissolve the company. The magazine hasn't picked up by another company, so it just doesn't get made anymore.

The Scrapbook Answers website is even gone already. Here...check it out: www.scrapbookanswers.com (and for those of you who have subscriptions and don't know what to do about it, there is a link on the remaining page of the site in order to contact them).

I am really upset, as I feel that this was one of the best scrapbooking magazines out there. It was a great tool...i loved teh articles they had showing comparisons of similar items, or reviewing the newest stuff, so we didnt all waste our money. the magazine even came with a cd of downloadable fonts and freebies! it was simply amazing. and now it is no more. i am sad.

my new camera!!!

so, internet shopping, coupled with being bored at work is NOT a good combo...or IS it???

i JUST purchased a new camera from Circuit City, and it is being held in-store for me, so I can pick it up when I leave here. (and I'm only working a half-day today, so that is REALLY soon!!!)

This is the new Olympus Stylus 1000. it has 10 megapixels. can you BELIEVE it??? there are 24 different shooting modes...everything from sport, to documents, to candlelight and snow. (wow). and it has the stability function, for less blurry shots. and it is water-resistent, so i dont have to worry about a little drizzle now and again.

i've had my "old" camera for almost 4 years now. it was the first large purchase that tony and i had ever made together. special in that way, but time to say goodbye. it's 4 megapixels, doesn't like low light, and most of my shots end up blurry. VERY frustrating. so, tony and i kept saying, we ARE GOING to get a new camera. (especially with all this new wedding stuff...there's NO way im gonna use a crappy camera!)

so, without thinking (too much)...i DID it! i'll post some shots soon...once i learn how to use the thing!

becoming real...

My mom and stepfather threw an engagement party for Tony and me, last weekend. It turned out to be absolutely fabulous! I was overwhelmed by the amount of effort my family put into the party...my mom decided to make it even more special by surprising my future in-laws (and Tony) by making Colombian food. I lent her an authentic cookbook of mine, but many of the ingredients were foreign to us both. My mom headed to a nearby Mexican market with a list of questionable items in hand. And the result was absolutely magnificent!

174_7404 Here are the appetizers...chili flavored dried mango, fresh pineapple served in coconut halves, fresh mango and kiwi served in pineapple halves, fried plantains served with jalepeno sauce, and candied plantains served over shredded coconut. (wow.)  too bad, but I forgot to get a picture of the rest of the food! there were 2 different beef dishes, refried beans, and coconut chicken made by my mom and aunt. and tony's family brought a pork dish and raisin coconut rice! (yum.)

once i walked into the backyard, and saw the setup, it all started to hit me. this was for REAL. i know, i know...i've been engaged for a while now, but each time something NEW comes along, it makes me realize this all over again. felt foreign, to be the center of attention.

174_7409 the backyard was gorgeous...they had decorated with round tables and purple tablecloths (my favorite color...), and had scattered large fake diamonds on the tables. there were also little tin boxes that said "love" as favors...filled with both sweet and sour jelly bellies...explained to us that marriage has both sweet and sour parts.

174_7418 Mom set up a game for Tony and I to play. Earlier, she had gotten the two of us alone, and had us fill out a multiple-choice questionaire about ourselves (favorite Disney movie, where we want to travel, what month we want to get married, WHERE we want to get married, etc...). Then, for the game, mom positioned us at opposite ends of the backyard...we were asked a question, and had to guess what the OTHER person had said. Everytime we were correct, we took a step toward the other (I even had my father next to me, to "walk me down the aisle"...though he didn't even want to give me up THAT day)! It was fun, and we showed everyone that we know each other pretty well.

my dad made a really nice toast to us both...that almost made my dad AND me cry. the gist of it was may we always remain the best of friends, lovers, and partners...support each other, but give each other the room to be ourselves. my dad said how he was VERY happy to welcome tony to the family. it was so special to me, cuz my dad has pretty much NEVER liked the guys i dated before. to have his approval means the world...

and, with that, here are some of my favorite pics from the day:

174_7425 me and my "lil" bro, shaun

174_7436 me and my best friends...been friends since 1st and 2nd grade!!!

left to right: Michelle, me, Jennifer

174_7438_1 tony and (most of) his women...if his mom had been in this picture, it would have been complete!

left to right: me, Tony, Grace, Tony's sis Maria, and Laura.

174_7441 my "rebellious" grandma, Elizabeth

174_7447 and...my honey, Tony!

Just a quick thanks to all involved in this day. From my family and all of their preparations, to my family and friends who came to celebrate this day with us...thank you for sharing in this joyous occasion...may there be many, MANY more days of celebration to come!

mini-project

So, I have NOT been creating much of ANYTHING lately. First off, the all-consuming thought of planning my weding...far off or not, I need to handle some stuff ALREADY. and THEN i had a large scrapbook project for someone else, which always tends to drain me a bit. when THAT finished, i DESPARATELY wanted to create something...my hands were literally so RESTLESS one night with the NEED to just CREATE, you know? well...any project i could think of to make just seemed too large and INTIMIDATING...not knowing where to START, i did NOTHING. sigh.

not so good, i know. but i got some new tools and goodies to try out (crop-o-dile...have had ups and downs about it already...), so i decided to just GO-FOR-IT...at 11:00 last night. so, using some of my new favorite papers, and playing with a photo in photoshop (LOVE this filter right now...makes things appear so "dreamy"), came up with THIS:First_day_copy (sorry about the weird colors here...the pic i took kinda sucked, but i didnt realize this until AFTER i uploaded it to my computer...and the ORIGINAL art was taken to work to "beautify" my desk...)

I had decided a while ago to make a mini book (2-ring sarabinder) of my ENGAGEMENT period...theres LOTS of stuff out there for the actual WEDDING, but THIS time gets skipped over, for the most part. uh-uh. I'm gonna CELEBRATE! in any case, im gonna make that book, one page at a time...this is the first page i have created for it.  : )

my new name!

so, i was sent an invitation to a friend's little sister's bachelorette party...hmmm...we'll see. but, what made me do a double-take was that it was addressed to Michelle CARRILLO, not Michelle Simmons. wow. Carrillo. That's gonna be my new last name. it felt so stange (and yet, nice) to see it somewhere in print (other than my own dreamy practicing handwriting) that i started to tear up just a bit (not that that is anything new, mind you)... but it was exciting!  REAL, you know? wow.

even though this name won't officially be mine for a WHILE yet...
