I came across this post on pinterest a few days ago. And even though this challenge actually took place over a year ago, it's still incredibly relevant. And I need help in this area. So I decided to take the 31-days-to-a-brand-new-blog challenge, myself.
Day 1: Analyze your blog's traffic.
I think I hear the crickets chirping. And the tumbleweeds a'blowing. That's right... I don't really HAVE a lot of traffic. I don't blame people. My blog appears a bit scatterbrained at this moment. I don't have a blogging schedule or pattern, and the posts are so incredibly random in their content, as well. Time to change that, and this first day gave me a bit of an eye-opener to the problems I face.
It looks like I DO get some traffic from google... and some got to my site on purpose (searching for "suitcase studio"), butit appears that a LOT of others get to my blog by mistake, and I'm not actually what they're looking for.
And it looks like facebook is still a great source of sending people my way. (hooray for facebook!)
As for the posts themselves... most people visited the main page (not surprising). And then the most page views were of my newest blog entries (also not surprising). But then there were some things that made me go "huh."
Surprisingly enough, I got a LOT of hits on my lululemon post. Hooray for keeping in touch with current trends. I'll have to remember that.
And then a few more random hits when people were doing searches for specific places, and the word "wedding." Another thing to keep in mind.
Lessons learned:
1. use better keywords, and use them more often. I get lazy and don't do this, when I KNOW this is what will help drive traffic my way.
2. Get specific with not just my keywords/metatags, but text inside the blog posts and titles, as well. Label my location & what I'm doing, rather than simply coming up with a clever title. I don't have enough traffic yet to simply rest on being "clever." (Ex: "family portraits in San Juan Capistrano" instead of "railroad tracks and smiles").
3. Blog MORE. (duh.)
4. I need to figure out WHAT to blog instead of being so amazingly random. I even confuse myself. Decide what is my blog trying to SAY, other than "this was what I did today."
5. Consider blogging more about current trends (clothes, stores, etc.). Things that my target audience would be interested in and appreciate.
I've got my work cut out for me...
Great read!! and yes.. it's so hard to figure out what to write!!! But you can do it.. :)
